In Pondicherry, a former French colony in India, Bastille Day is annually observed with tremendous fanfare. [On the night before Bastille Day, retired soldiers march and commemorate the occasion while playing the national anthems of India and France in memory of the French troops who lost their lives in the fights. French and Indian flags fly next to one another throughout the festival, illustrating the blending of cultures and histories.
